CLIMATE CHANGE FUND

Impact Overview

March – June 2026

Over four months, the Climate Change Fund Portfolio delivered a concentrated burst of research policy wins, and field-building milestones. From a first-of-its-kind geothermal roadmap for India and a royal audience on methane at St James’ Palace, to a decade of alternative protein research crossing $24 million in cumulative grants.

Themes Across The Portfolio

Six threads tie the quarter’s work together. Expand any theme for the detail behind it.

Geothermal Energy Deployment & Policy

Project InnerSpace and CATF drove geothermal from niche to mainstream — through CERAWeek activations, state ecosystem reports, the India roadmap, bipartisan U.S. Senate legislation, and the Dubrovnik Geothermal Declaration. This was the most dynamic theme of the period.

GFI anchored this theme through its 10-year anniversary reflection, 2026 State of the Industry reports, Research Grant Program milestones, and new grant programs for early-stage researchers in the U.S. and Canada.

Cumulative metrics, $24M awarded, 129 projects, $75M in follow-on funding ,mark a maturing field.

CATF’s methane work spanned field inspections in southern France (finding two-thirds of sites emitting), coalition letters defending EU methane rules, a royal audience at St James’s Palace, and expansion of its Fossil Fuel Regulatory Programme to Egypt, Brazil, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

CATF advanced CCS and industrial decarbonization through its Article 23 Watch program, the RISE PA awards ($267M across 31 Pennsylvania projects), and engagement with EU co-legislators on the Industrial Accelerator Act. Consistent activity across the full period.

CATF’s Nuclear Scaling Initiative introduced a Reactor Selection Tool comparing 35 reactor designs, and co-convened a Superhot Rock Geothermal Summit with the Bezos Earth Fund. New modeling showed California could save up to $44 billion annually by 2045 through next-generation geothermal investment.

CATF’s Central and Eastern European Fellows program launched its 2026 cohort of 14 fellows from 10 countries, while the Dubrovnik Geothermal Declaration and an Africa utility roundtable extended the portfolio’s global reach. GFI’s MOU with the Climate Bonds Initiative added a sustainable finance dimension.
